PHARM - D

Pharm.D. or Doctor of Pharmacy is a 6-year integrated graduate program (integ-PG). Students passing in 12th standard examination with the science stream are eligible for this course. Syllabus of Pharm.D focuses on Clinical Pharmacology and Therapeutics.

The period of six years duration is divided into two phases –
Phase 1 – Consisting of the First, Second, Third, Fourth, and Fifth academic year.

Phase II – Consisting of internship or Residency training during the sixth year involving posting in specialty units. It is a phase of training wherein a student is exposed to actual Pharmacy Practice or Clinical Pharmacy Services and acquires skill under supervision so that he or she may become capable of functioning independently.

This course is introduced to improve the Clinical and Hospital Pharmacy Services. They are directly involved in the medicines given to the patients. The system works like this, The MBBS doctor will diagnosis the patient and give the report to the Pharmacist (Pharm.D) and the Pharmacist will prescribe the medicine considering the medical history of the patient.

Pharm.D. course differs from Regular Pharmacy courses such as B. Pharm. And M. Pharm. The main difference is that Pharm.D. is clinically oriented, i.e., Patient-Specific. Students are trained to counsel patients and inform them about the medicine/ drug dose, time, and method. The course focuses on the mechanism of a drug’s actions/ side effects / adverse drug reactions on the body, the main causes for the appearance of the disease, and its possible complications that can occur if left untreated. Pharm.D also focuses on the lifestyle changes that a patient can implement to improve health.
